The Boston Massacre: 12 Run Outburst

:

The Indians were 10-17 and in last place in the AL Central as they entered Fenway Park to play the Boston Red Sox.  Most of the talk around baseball that day had been the fallout concerning the news that former Cleveland and Boston slugger Manny Ramirez, a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers had tested postive for an illegal substance for the third time and would begin serving a 50-game suspsenion.  As the Tribe came into Feway, their big concern was a bullpen had been solidly defeated through the first six weeks of the 2009 season.  Aaron Laffey had been moved to the bullpen and Jeremy Sowers was recalled from Columbus to take the spot vacated by Laffey in the rotation.    Sowers would hold a 2-1 lead as the game moved to the bottom of the sixth inning.   Sowers would start the inning and fail to retire any of the six batters he faced. Sowers would be replaced by Masa Kobyashi who would fail to retire any of the five batters he faced.  Matt Herges would be summoned from the Indians bullpen and he'd immediately give up a 3-run homerun to Jason Bay.  The Red Sox would send an American League record by sending 12 men to the plate and each man would score before the first out was recorded.  The Red Sox would win the game 13-3.
